D-day 2007

D-day arrived this year, much as it had in 1944, cold, damp and misty. The main event this year was the opening of the visitor centre at the American Cemetery on the bluffs high above Omaha Beach. The centre has been cut into the bluffs so as not to impact visually on the historic area. The opening ceremony was performed by Robert Gates the American Secretary of Defence.

All along the beaches the usual commerations took place, and for the second year mostly organised by the French.
