VE Day 2012

As usual May 8th is a holiday in France and each own and village marks the end of the Second World War with a ceremony at its war memorial.

After the service we go to the village hall in our case Fierville Les Mines to drink a toast to our Liberators.

You may be forgiven for thinking that I use the same photographs each year, but look carefully, everybody is one year older.

The French flag flying outside my house was originally taken from France to the UK at the fall of France in 1940, was given to me and then brought back to France when I moved here some years ago. The US flag is an original 48 star flag that flew over an American Town Hall in 1944 at D-day, and then in 1945 on VE Day and VJ Day.
